About Bucovina

Via Transilvanica starts in Bucovina, more specifically at Putna Monastery, where Saint Voivode Stephen the Great rests, the founder of the monastery. In the north of the country, Bucovina serves as a bridge between Transylvania and Moldova.

The 144 km route highlights picturesque areas and historical monuments unique in the world. From the Putna Monastery, the path heads toward the Sucevița depression, passing through Vatra Moldoviței, over the Bucovina Hills, toward Mestecăniș pass in Pojorâta, and then gradually through Țara Dornelor, embraced by the Giumalău, Suhard, and Călimani Mountains. From there, the trail winds across hills to Poiana Negri, with its wonderful springs, and ends in Poiana Stampei, the final settlement of this historical region.

Bucovina is a challenge, a test for hikers, but also a kind of blessing, because once they have crossed the Bucovina hills, they are ready to complete the other regions of this long-distance trail.
