About Terra Saxonum

This is the land of the Saxons. The region starts in Archita, passes through Brașov county, then continues through several Saxon villages in Mureș, reaches Sighișoara, and continues through Sibiu to Micăsasa.

The region reminds visitors of the heritage left by the Saxons in Transylvania, with architecture typical of homes and farms, fortified churches, and the “bacon tower.” These towers, present in almost every village with a fortified church, were places where the entire community stored provisions for the winter. On weekends, villagers would take what they needed for a week, without touching anyone else’s bacon.

Today, the Saxon regions remain a fabulous legacy of Transylvania, reflecting an important chapter in our country’s history. Traveling through Terra Saxonum is unforgettable, full of lessons on one hand and unparalleled beauty on the other.
